about

This is the third solo bass release by Danish bassist Asger Thomsen.

All the music on this album is freely improvised without overdubs in the course of a night in Copenhagen.

"What he does on "Solipsis" is uncompromising and that he deserves credit for this. His music is a very physical exploration of the possible sounds of his instrument, including extended techniques, and this in a coherent way (as in the opposite of experimental sounds for the fun of coming up with unheard noises) to create musical narratives. (...)
His music will not be to everyone's taste but you can only admire Thomsen's willingness to "go for it". "
- Stef Gijssels, freejazzblog.org

"(...) It is that struggle that Thomsen beautifully voices here. But Thomsen struggles with that double bass throughout this album, it is strikingly physical music that he manages to create here. We hear him toil, scrape and wring in 'Contortions'; wring, purge and scratch in the exciting 'Spastics' and create an equally strange sound world in 'Samsa', with more than thirteen minutes by far the longest part of this album."
- Ben Taffijn, nieuwenoten.nl (translated from Dutch)

"The double bass produces countless strange voices, none are associated with conventional double bass, and some even sound like coming from hungry and angry alien insects."
- Eyal Hareuveni, salt-peanuts.eu

"Vi får seks fritt improviserte «strekk», hvor Thomsen strekker bassens virkeområder nesten til det ytterste. (...) Han har sin egen stil og teknikk, og lyden er tung og fin, slik man kun får fra de beste bassistene, og de seks improvisasjonene vi får servert her, er kreative og gjort på en måte som ikke gjør dem altfor «streite» eller altfor avanserte."
- Jan Granlie, salt-peanuts.eu

Liner notes by Tomo Jacobson:
I’m with him while he records this album. Listening. Watching. “It
went quite different than before” he told me after playing the
piece. Just before starting it he said it’d be “the same idea for this
piece”. I watch his feet as he plays. They tread softly in place with
the music. He’s swaying right and left. Often rises on his toes. His
breath relaxed but heavy. Sounding much like when he bows on
the edge of his bass’ body. Face still like the surface of the lake. On
his toes again. Thunder sound Asger has. He's not gentle with the
bass. There’s a strong agency. He wants something from it in every
gesture. He wants to be excited. “Putting the wrong stick in my
pocket is the worse I can fuck up” he says. This is where he’s
coming from. He’s music is edges.
